How to Choose Freeze Dried Sweets When You Don’t Know Where to Start
If you’ve never tried freeze dried sweets before, deciding what to order can be surprisingly difficult. There are plenty of different options, and sweets that seem quite similar in their original form can have very different textures once they’ve been freeze dried.
The good news is that there’s no need to find the perfect option immediately. Trying different varieties is part of the experience.
Start With Sweets You Already Know
A great place to begin is with confectionery you already recognise.
Choosing familiar freeze dried candy allows you to compare the crunchy version with the original. You already know what the sweet normally looks and feels like, so the transformation is much easier to appreciate.
Many chewy sweets become crisp and airy during freeze drying, while certain varieties can expand considerably.
That first crunch can therefore be very different from what you’re expecting, even when you’ve eaten the original sweet countless times before.
Starting with familiar favourites also makes it easier to decide what kind of freeze dried texture you prefer before experimenting with more varieties.
Try a Mixed Selection
If choosing one type sounds impossible, don’t choose just one.
A freeze dried gift set or mixed selection gives you the opportunity to try several varieties and compare them side by side.
Instead of finishing one bag before moving onto something different, put a few pieces of each variety into separate bowls. Try them individually and decide which ones you would order again.
You could even create your own rating system. Give each sweet a score for appearance, texture and crunch before choosing your overall favourite.
If you’re sharing with friends or family, compare everyone’s rankings afterwards.
Don’t be surprised if nobody agrees.
Experiment Until You Find Your Favourites
Once you’ve tried a few freeze dried sweets, you’ll start to get a better idea of the types you enjoy most.
You might prefer larger, airy pieces or sweets with a firmer crunch. You may discover that something you wouldn’t normally choose becomes one of your favourites after being freeze dried.
That’s what makes exploring different varieties interesting.
There’s no correct order and no single sweet that everyone needs to try first. Start with something familiar, add a few options you’ve never experienced before and build your favourites from there.
Before long, the difficult question probably won’t be which freeze dried sweet you should try first.
It’ll be deciding which ones you’re willing to share.
